BLUE CANYON, Placer County — Wildlife safety is part of the Blue Canyon Interstate 80 rehabilitation project, not only pavement resurfacing and new vehicle lanes.
Caltrans says the project includes a wildlife-crossing box culvert. The agency cites repeated wildlife-related collisions in the corridor as one reason for including an animal passage alongside roadway improvements. The culvert would provide a route under the highway for some animals, reducing conflicts with moving traffic.
A wildlife culvert is a planned project feature; its presence in the scope does not prove that the structure is already operating or that animal collisions can no longer occur. The wider project also includes work on existing drainage culverts and roadside lighting.
What travelers and residents should know
Drivers should continue to watch for animals at dawn, dusk and after dark, maintain appropriate following distances and avoid sudden swerves. Construction and wildlife awareness are both necessary along this mountain route.
