BLUE CANYON, Placer County — Caltrans says construction began in April 2026 on a major Interstate 80 rehabilitation program named for Blue Canyon, with completion projected for December 2029.
The state transportation department lists a total project cost of approximately $116.67 million. Work is spread across several sections of Interstate 80, with pavement rehabilitation, a new eastbound truck-climbing lane, median-barrier improvements, better lighting and drainage system repairs.
The project’s stated goal is to reduce deterioration and improve freight and passenger travel in the Sierra corridor. The listed end date is a forecast, not a guarantee of uninterrupted construction or continuous lane closures until that month.
What travelers and residents should know
Drivers traveling near Blue Canyon should check Caltrans QuickMap and posted construction notices for the precise location of active work. Old weekly lane schedules do not indicate whether a restriction remains in place today.
